Is Gastric Bypass Surgery right for you?

Many factors should be weighed when one considers such an important and yes, sometimes deadly procedure such as Gastric Bypass Surgery. The risk of death is extremely low, but it has happened. The procedure is getting safer almost daily with improved knowledge and operational techniques. As well, many doctors are now specializing in the surgery, so their skill is considerably high.

So, is it right for you? The main reason for undergoing Gastric Byass Surgery is to induce weight loss. This is accomlished in the procedure by removing the lower intestine from the equation. A cut is made before the large intestine reaches the lower intestine, and then another before the bowel. The lower intestine is then taken 'out of the loop'. This surgery results in the patient having a very, very small area in which to store food, for body absorption. the average is about 4 ounces. What effect this has on the body seems quite straight forward, less food, less calories. however, an amazing thing happens to almost 100% of patients who have this surgery. They report that their craving for their favourite foods is entirely gone! That's right, they no longer need sweets, or fast food or any other fatty foods that made them fat in the first place. Researchers still aren't sure why this happens. many studies are underway to determine is an enzyme in the lower intenstine is the one that triggers these irrational eating behaviours, and removing the lower intestine, removes the behaviuours, or cravings.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Canada

On April 20, 2008 the CBS television show, '60 Minutes' featured an in-depth study on the benefits and risks of Gastric Bypass Surgery. Although this is an American television program, and the news piece was based on American laws and medical studies, I think the information translates well to our Canadian system. In short, here is some of the information that was related.

The most amazing claim made by the televsion program was that Gastric Bypass Surgery is almost 90% effective in CURING type 2 Diabetes. Out of 8 persons interviewed on the program who had Gastric Bypass Surgery, and who also had type 2 Diabetes, all 8 reported that they no longer had any symptons or signs of the disease. All 8 of the persons had quit taking thei diabetes medicine, tests, and injections within ONE WEEK of having Gastric Bypass Surgery.

Another benefit to Gastric Bypass Surgery, besides the obvious weight-loss, is reported to be cutting the risk of obesity related cancers by over 50%. I don't believe that major medical studies have yet proven this statistic conclusively, but many studies are currently underway.

Sleep apnea and high blood pressure are 2 other maladies that are said to be nearly 100% cured in cases where patients have undergone Gastric Bypass Surgery.

This website is dedicated to helping all people, especially Canadians, obtain up-to-date information on Gastric Bypass Surgery. It is my hope that we can provide links to credited clinics and doctors in Canada that can help you determine whether Gastric Bypass Surgery is right for you.

Please check back frequently to this website for more information. As well, feel free to post any comments or questions you may have in regard to Gastric Bypass Surgery in Canada.
